Celebrity hairstylist and Dove spokesperson Mark Townsend was in Vancouver this spring to dish about tress trends tailor made for our city.

Celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend’s coiffed the likes of Jessica Biel, Cate Blanchette and the Olsen twins (he’s also the man behind Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Katniss braid’, as seen on the Hunger Games’ red carpet.) But this April the Dove spokesperson was in Vancouver to solve the real-life hair problems of one lucky local and dish about tress trends tailor-made for our city.

Real Canadian Hair Challenge winner Janet was treated to a salon session with Townsend, who used products from Dove’s Nourishing Oil Care and Refresh+Care lines to tame her self-proclaimed “frizzy lion’s mane.”

“The weather I’ve seen here is so wet, it can really wreak havoc on the hair,” Townsend said. “The fight against frizz starts in the shower…and continues with a serum, applied on wet hair and re-applied as needed throughout the day.”

Mark Townsend created actress Jennifer Lawrence’s famous ‘Katniss braid’ for the Hunger Games premiere.

In a damp climate like Vancouver’s, Dove products loaded with weightless ‘nutra-oils’—almond, coconut and argon—moisturize and seal each cuticle, creating a barrier that protects hair from the frizzing effects of humidity.

Turning to our active West Coast lifestyles (i.e., morning seawall runs and lunchtime yoga sessions), Townsend warns that washing hair after each workout’s a no-no.

“On photo shoots…I might have to do five or six looks in one day; in between I’ll use a dry shampoo,” he said, advising you choose one that’s starch-based (not powder) to absorb all the oil and dirt in the hair without leaving residue. “As a styling product [the right] dry shampoo can give amazing texture and volume at the same time.”

Asked if he uses Dove products on superstar clients like January Jones and Christina Aguilera, Townsend cut to the chase: “The bottles are white when I get them, but they’re totally beat up by the time they’ve travelled from red carpet to red carpet in my kit,” he said. “These products are for real women, and celebrities are real women, too. They just happen to have me with them.”
